Green Solutions with Botanicals

There are many advantages to the softer chemistries featured in botanical insecticides.  Significantly, these essential-oil based products pose little to no threat to humans and animals.  Further, because they work by exploiting the natural strengths of plants and the natural weaknesses of insects, pests are unlikely to develop resistance.

In comparison to synthetic pesticides, botanical pesticides break down more quickly.  This is positive from an environmental standpoint.  Botanical pesticides may require more frequent applications due to a lack of residual control.

The main active ingredients are naturally derived from plants.  The main ingredients are peppermint oil, rosemary oil, and geraniol (naturally derived from geranium, rose and lemon plants).

It is important to note, that the formulations require specific dosing and application techniques based on the target pest. Incorrect concentrations can be irritating to the skin through contact and lungs through inhalation.

Common misconceptions about natural products:

Myth #1: Natural products don’t work as well.

Truth: Most natural pest control products feature active ingredients that have effectively controlled insects for centuries.  The challenge is finding a pest management professional who will apply them correctly to combat the target pest.  These products can also be safely applied in areas where traditional products can’t.

Myth #2: There is not enough information available about natural products.

Truth: There are pest professionals researching the products, making recommendations for use and application and advocating for greater integration into traditional services.  Green pest control technology continues to advance, providing greater variety and flexibility to modern PMPs.
